Nautilus award for best AV Project

At Infocomm 2011, PRO AV Spotlight Awards recognized the industry's best professional audio-visual installations. This year NED was honored to be awarded Best Corporate AV Project for their work on the Qualcomm 25th Anniversary Museum.

NED delivered three cruise ships this spring, designed lighting for the GM exhibits at the Chicago and New York Auto Show, the Toyota announcement show, and the HP Discover Conference. The design and installation work for multiple military projects is ongoing.

Breaking news!  NED has been retained as lighting consultant for a feasibility study for a re-design of the lighting in the Senate Chamber in the U.S. Capitol, Washington D.C.  This study encompasses both the architectural and broadcast lighting and is intended to reduce the energy consumption and heat loads through the use of LED and other energy efficient light sources.

Qualcomm 25th Anniversary Museum

Infocomm 2011-Best Corporate AV Project

Nautilus Entertainment Design provided lighting design and A/V system design for the Qualcomm Museum including over 16 large format interactive video kiosks and an integrated control system. The museum was designed to celebrate the 25 years of technological advancements of the company. Guests are invited to interactively explore the history as well as the future possibilities of Qualcomm technology.

The "Historical Timeline" display area contains what the team referred to as Wave Walls. Each of the eight Wave Walls was designed to house a combination of video tiles and Qualcomm historical artifacts. The highlight of the "Future Area" (bottom photo) contains a flush mounted, curved video wall thirteen feet wide by four feet high.

Carnival Magic

The delivery on April 30th of Carnival Magic, marks the 45th ship for which NED has provided entertainment design services to Carnival Corporation.  The responsibilities for the NED team included design of the Carnival Seaside Theater's 12' X 20' LED screen and sound system, along with over 24 other venues around the ship including the 2,000 seat Showtime Theatre, the atrium, casino, lounges, bars, restaurants and the three clubs.

Costa Crociere-Favolosa

The newest and now largest of Costa's ships set sail from Venice to Trieste, where she was named in a gala ceremony on July 2 by Italian actress Margareth Madè. NED provided designs for all entertainment and broadcast systems including commissioning and inspection services.

NED provided the designs for the lighting, audio and rigging systems and integrated control system for the 800-seat, three deck high Teatro Hortensia. The two deck high Fever Disco features a 30-monitor video wall and dance floor incorporating a fully programmable LED lighting system.

In the Lido pool area, NED provided design and project management for the giant, 190 square foot LED video wall used for live feeds, movies and other events for both day and evening use.  Costa Favolosa was built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy and the entertainment systems were supplied and installed by HMS, Italia.

The Yachts of Seabourn-Quest

NED completed work on the third of Seabourn's near identical 450 passenger ships, the Seabourn Quest.  Actress Blythe Danner was the godmother in the naming ceremony held in Barcelona, June 20, 2011.

As with her sister ships, which NED delivered in 2009 and 2010, this vessel has four dining venues as well as six bars and lounges. The Club is a multi-use space which can serve as a theater, mini-ballroom, disco or during the day, as a meeting room.  NED designed all of the entertainment systems including lighting, audio and video for the 18 venues including the show lounge, a secondary lounge, dining room, spa, crew and support areas.

Current ship projects include ...

  • Carnival Breeze, scheduled for delivery in spring of 2012
  • Carnival Liberty refit, scheduled for October, 2011
  • Costa Fascinosa, scheduled for delivery in spring of 2012

Lighting Design for Shows and Events

New York International Auto Show 2011-General Motors

NYIAS2011-GM display

With GM taking over the entire newly opened North Hall of the Jacob Javitts Center, NED was able to not only light the cars with more control, but this year was able to create a unique environment for the entire display which was designed by Czarnowski.

Besides lighting the 40,000 sq. ft exhibit, NED also provided the lighting design for the press event featuring the reveal of the new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Eco.

Jim Tetlow served as principal lighting designer, the project manager was Denis McCubbin, lighting designer and programmer was Kurt Doemelt, associate lighting designers were Ashley Johnstone & Carissa Walker. Lightsource was the lighting contractor for all equipment and labor. Aquila Productions was the producer of the press event.

Hewlett Packard Discover Conferences

The Hewlett Packard Discover Conference & Expo is a new annual forum where all of the newest technologies and infrastructures in the IT world are showcased. As producers of the Keynote sessions, Kaleidoscope Productions engaged NED as lighting designers for the event, which was held at the Sands-Venetian convention center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jim Tetlow was the principle lighting designer with support from Kurt Doemelt, Michael Paolini, Ashley Johnstone, and Patrick Schultz as programmer.

Toyota National Dealer Meeting

This year's Toyota National Dealer Meeting was again held at the Mandalay Bay Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The set was comprised primarily of 9mm LED video displays and Versa-Tubes. The majority of the 9mm LED product was mounted to two concentric curved walls that could fly in to the deck or out above the proscenium, providing a variety of dramatic backdrops for the annual dealer business meeting and reveal show.

NED provided the lighting for both the business meeting and the new product announcement show, each of which had multiple new product introductions. However, the announcement show was a spectacle within itself, with several production numbers involving twelve dancers, a full marching drum-line number and even fireworks!

Jim Tetlow was the principle designer for this Kaleidoscope Productions produced event, with Ashley Johnstone as associate lighting designer and Kurt Doemelt as programmer.

Military Projects

MCAGCC Since the beginning of this year, NED has successfully completed the designs for 18 projects on military bases in the southwest, with 7 more currently in design.  NED's scope has included audio-visual consulting and design for both new construction and renovation projects involving a myriad of different types of spaces including classrooms, conference rooms, multipurpose venues, Bachelor Enlisted Quarters, fitness centers and training facilities.  The AV system designs for these projects involved a combination of integrated video display systems, teleconferencing suites, combinable classrooms, digital signage systems and basic entertainment systems.
